L’Arche Highland is a community for people with and without learning disabilities. We work to support individuals to achieve their fullest potential in a vibrant, caring environment based on principles of mutual relationship, shared life, and spirituality. Members with learning disabilities are known as ‘core members’ because they are at the heart of everything we do. Our community is made up for four residential houses in Inverness, four busy and fun-filled workshops (gardening, woodwork, candle-making and life skills), and our beautiful grounds and gardens.

What we’re looking for:

We are looking for volunteers from all walks of life to fulfil a variety of roles within our residential houses and workshops. •	Assisting in our woodwork, candles or life skills workshops
•	Helping out with community events and gatherings
•	Gardening
•	Creative work such as art, music, or drama
•	Sharing a particular skill or talent
•	Driving
•	…and much more.

As a volunteer with L’Arche, you will be celebrated as someone with a vital contribution to our community life. We will work with you to find a role that suits your unique talents, skills and interests. We will support you to develop lasting and meaningful connections within our community, whether with core members, fellow volunteers, or assistants.

You will thereby contribute to the vital social inclusion of individuals who can often be marginalised or isolated, particularly in the Highlands where transport is limited. Many people feel the need to get out and meet other people. The Chatty Café Scheme is addressing that need by creating “Chatty Tables” around the country, and for the last few weeks, people have been coming on a Tuesday morning to our Chatty Table in Café de Paulo in WASPS Creative Academy in Inverness, for a friendly chat and a drink. As they arrive, they are met by a volunteer who makes sure they feel welcome and that everything runs smoothly. We are looking for another volunteer.

Our Chatty Table is proving popular and is making a real difference to people’s lives, so if you enjoy meeting people and would like to spare two and a half hours a week to help, please contact Christine at ChattyCafeInverness@gmail.com. Thereafter, application will be via the Chatty Cafe Scheme website.

Our Lifeline fosterers provide temporary, loving homes for cats whose families are fleeing domestic abuse, until they can be safely reunited.

Before applying, please make sure you:
- have no other pets at home (we can’t guarantee your foster cat will like the company of other cats or dogs!). If you have pets that live in a tank or cage, get in touch and we’ll have a chat about whether this could be suitable
- either own your own property or have written permission from your landlord or housing provider to foster cats

By fostering with Lifeline, you’ll be helping us to support someone in need of a temporary home for their cat. We’ll cover all costs so all you need to do is provide a loving home for your foster cat and send us lots of photos so we can give their owner updates. Fostering with our service is completely confidential, so you won’t actually know anything about the owner and they also won’t know your identity either. We particularly need volunteers who are keen to work with the participants and ponies, the work involves things like grooming and tacking up the ponies, leading the ponies and/or walking beside the ponies to support the riders. Our sessions are held weekdays, generally in the morning but with more volunteers we could expand the number of participants we can help. If you can commit to helping regularly it would be great but everyone understands that’s not always possible and life can get in the way so any time would be great. You don’t have to know anything about horses, or even like being around animals there are plenty of other opportunities to get involved such as fundraising, publicity, general maintenance and poo picking the fields.
We have Public Liability insurance and Trustee Indemnity for all volunteers. Volunteers aged between 12 and 90 also have Personal Accident insurance (with some restrictions for those aged between 80 and 90).
All volunteers at Highland Group RDA will need to provide the names and contact details of 2 referees who are not a relative or partner and who have known them for more than 1 year. Volunteers of 16 years of age and over who are actively involved with our sessions are required to undergo an enhanced disclosure check because they are volunteering with vulnerable adults and children.
